The 6-Minute Slab Shipping Stress Test Before You Scale a New Mailer

Before ordering hundreds of custom mailers or a 3D-printed slab holder, run this short stress test on the exact format you plan to ship. The goal is not to simulate every carrier event. It is to catch obvious movement, pressure, and workflow failures while the design is still cheap to change.


Minute 1: Confirm the fit

Test every slab brand and label configuration you expect to ship. The holder should retain the slab without crushing corners, stressing the case, or requiring force that slows packing. Record the tightest and loosest fit instead of relying on one sample.


Minute 2: Shake test

Place the protected slab in the intended mailer or box and shake it in six directions for 10 seconds each. Listen for contact and check whether the slab has migrated. Movement is a design signal—not something to solve with more tape after launch.


Minutes 3–4: Compression and edge check

Apply moderate hand pressure to the packed parcel, then inspect the slab’s corners, label, and face. Look for direct pressure points, flexing, or a closure that can open in transit. Do not use a valuable card for early destructive testing; use a sacrificial slab or dummy load.


Minutes 5–6: Workflow audit

Time one complete pack from card inspection to carrier-ready parcel. Write down every extra step, tool, and decision. A holder that protects perfectly but adds several minutes to every order may be a poor production tool; a simpler design that is consistent may create more real value.


Pass, revise, or stop

Pass when the slab stays retained, no pressure points appear, and the workflow is repeatable. Revise when fit or pack time is inconsistent. Stop when the design needs too many variants or the fully loaded cost exceeds the damage risk it is meant to reduce.
